The Quiet Power of Poetry

We often think of poetry as something to analyse, interpret or explain. But its greatest gift may be something much simpler.

It invites us to slow down.

A poem asks very little of us. There is no argument to win, no lesson to master, no destination to reach. Just a handful of words and the space between them.

In a world that rewards speed and constant stimulation, poetry quietly offers another way of being. It reminds us that meaning doesn't always arrive through more thinking. Sometimes it appears in stillness.

The best poems don't tell us what to believe. They point, then step aside. Like a finger pointing to the moon, the words are only there to reveal what was already present.

That is why silence is as important as language. The pauses between the lines allow something deeper to emerge. We are not simply reading a poem—we are meeting ourselves in it.

This is also why writing poetry can be such a gentle practice. It is less about inventing beautiful words and more about noticing. A bird on a fence. Rain on a window. A smile. The sting of a caterpillar after moving it to safety. These ordinary moments become extraordinary when we give them our full attention.

Stillness and poetry belong together. One creates the space; the other gives that space a voice.

Perhaps that is the real power of poetry. Not that it changes the world, but that it changes the way we see it.

And when the way we see changes, everything else quietly follows.
